I've done this on two separate occasions and they have ticketed both times.
EDIT: After about a week, AA re-issued my tickets with the JFK-LAX leg in Business. This was done without any prior consent. Thanks to EF alerts, I know they released the F seat about 4 hours before sending me my new itinerary. Very annoying and poor customer service - they changed my original cabin selection without informing me, AND risked me losing the award inventory.
Now they want to charge me an additional 10k miles (62.5k vs. 72.5k) for JFK-LAX in F, even though domestically, its 25k vs. 32.5k. I can understand 7.5k more, but 10k is unreasonable.
I'm really more upset about the changes being done without proper notice. Alas.
They made a mistake and fixed it. Maybe they should have told you they were doing this, but they were bound to change it when they discovered the mistake at ticketing. If the domestic flight's 3 cabins, then you have to pay the F rate to get the F cabin, that's the rule, you got lucky but they figured it out...
