That was exactly my point
agents sometimes say '72' hours or '24' hours, but it sometimes transpires the hold expires at midnight, not at the 72 or 24 hour mark.
In your case the agent may have thought it was 24 hours, or one day, but it was actually midnight in the day you made the booking.
