back in the day when I was a travel agent we used to use these types of packages for travel on a few days notice - as the fares where cheaper.

However we always advized our customers to check in, so that a lack of check in did not cancel the return flight.

I guess it depends on where you get the package from, these were from the airlines holiday operation.
