Finally got the booking with the AAA rate to work. Instead of entering my NRMA 3 digit code (which triggered the "phone to verify.." message), I simply entered the 16 digit membership number on my membership card. Easy.

Tbh, I wouldn't mind. My membership fee is somewhere in the neighborhood of $35-40/year. I can save that on a single night at Hilton sometimes, so I'm more than happy to pay for my AAA membership...
As a point of interest... gold/diamonds who don't use gov/aaa rates get on every 28% more upgrades than those who do (based on tracking ~3,000 hilton nights). Sometimes it can be very worthwhile to pay those few extra bucks if it means securing a better room
