Friends who work at UA have also shared nightmare stories about LOS...but also indicated that if you are carrying on, you shouldn't have too much issue there. (The biggest problem from what they've heard is luggage being pilfered...not to mention issues if you leave the LOS airport grounds.)

So connecting through LOS if you're carrying on should be a non-issue as long as you don't leave the airport. If you are checking bags, they recommend getting them wrapped and locked with TSA locks to avoid pilferage.
