It's a crap shoot. I have done it successfully at a few properties by simply asking for the favor at check in and presenting my card. Your buddy can also call MR, book it in your name and his number then you present your card at check in, but it's still his number actually on the reservation. I have gotten bumped to club level a few times and have never been denied lounge access.
Doesn't work all of the time. A few years ago, wife = silver, me = Plat Prem. Room booked in her name. Front desk refused lounge access unless we paid something like $50 per person.
