Re the 180 day rule, a quick googling turned up this explanation from a Japanese immigration lawyer (gyosei shoshi):

Basically, you can stay for more than 180 days in a year as a temporary visitor, but the immigration officials are required (by their internal procedures) to hassle you more about what you are doing in Japan, so you need a good explanation.
