I called last week about my US Airways (with 10k annual bonus) card, after the annual fee had posted. Quick and easy 2 minute call-- I told the representative I wanted to keep the card but wasn't interested in an annual fee, she "went to check with someone" and credited my account the annual fee. I may be in love with this card--I've now had it just 12 months, received TWO "$500 for 3 months, get 15,000 miles" promotions, 10,000 mile anniversary bonus, and a waived annual fee. Loving it.
