On a recent SFO-ORD flight, I could access a cell phone signal from my seat while we were sitting on the ground in SFO. When we landed in Chicago, even though we had lost WiFi access by then, there was no cell signal from the time we landed to after I left the aircraft. And I wasn't the only one who couldn't get a signal.
On my ORD-IAD flight on a Wi-Fi-less 757, I could access a cell phone signal from my seat while we were sitting on the ground , and when we landed in Washington, I got a cell signal immediately, and a a strong signal during taxi to the gate.
So is it a Wi-Fi matter, or just crappy cell coverage at ORD?
Interesting... I noticed the exact same thing last weekend when I flew into ORD on an A320 with wifi.
