BA have never asked me at checkin to pop it in the sizer but I have been asked to do so by BAA staff at LHR with my old tumi (even when fast - tracking).
The overall size may be important - does your case exceed all 3 dimensions?
Other than that it's a bit luck of the draw - if the airport staff don't like the look of the bag then sizer time comes in.
I'd suggest packing mission critical things (work and 1 spare pair of clothes) in a smaller cabin bag inside of the 57cm one so that if they do challenge you you can pull it out and check the new 57cm one.
Sorry but nothing is guaranteed nowadays even in first class.
