As the passenger was 17, I suspect the UM fee was not paid.
I don't understand the OP's comment regarding distressed passenger vouchers.
I thought those were vouchers offering discounts for passengers missing flights that were NOT MX.. MX issues would normally involve AA paying for the hotel.
It is possible there were no rooms available at the rate AA pays.
I would agree that AA should have handled this better. After all, AA should provide her a room.
I am confused about why OP's daughter's didn't have AA call her parent for 3 hours, rather than have her mother blame AA for not calling. The 17 year old could have also called the parent and explained the situation.
