I hope so but contact EMV transactions shouldn't be as slow as they in Walmart at the moment. A contact EMV transaction in a UK supermarket takes probably 5 seconds in total and most of that is pin entry (which wouldn't be an issue in the US as it'll likely be no cvm or signature).
Indeed--Target pre-hack had really fast credit card transactions for example. I think it depends on how the business is connected to the acquirer, really. There's a lot of places whose terminals still dial up over modem to clear the transaction.
