My past experience with non-refundable was some time ago when I booked the property on wrong dates - just 1 day off (using back button on the browser that "remembered" old dates. The manager of the property agreed to move my reservation to the dates I want. Perhaps, you can ask the manager to move the dates of your stay when you wife will fully recover?
If you can find e-mail of the manager, I suggest writing the manager directly.
