This. I was wondering the same thing - you should be able to have this as 1 award ticket and save the miles unless you're in SFO for more than 24 hours. If you don't have status you may have to pay to redeposit miles and then change the existing itinerary (don't know the fee structure unfortunately) but that may be worth it to save the miles you have to spend for the SFO - RNO hop
