W's 'train station' is a bit of a misnomer, seeing as it's so isolated and far away from everything else. The train station is just a short walk from Pen, LMO, MO, FS, UH, Island Shangri-la, IC anyway...if not just directly below. The only one in the same 'location' bracket is the Ritz Carlton being next to the W.
The W HK isn't dated at all, and it's probably one of the nicer Ws overall. I just wouldn't particularly stay there, or go out of my way to stay there, and certainly not over the slew of options available in HK.
I tend to find Ws city hotels much better than their resorts, which are an absolute mess (save for W Maldives).
In the end it's a matter of taste as well. I know plenty of people who rave about W Bali/Koh Samui etc and can't imagine themselves staying at something as classically appointed as Pen in cities or Aman's resorts.
But then that's their loss
