Thank you all for your help. YVR , according to their website, does have US Customs check facility and the flight from there to SFO will be a US domestic flight. It will help to pass the 6+ hours layover we have between flights.
I will not link the tickets, maybe at check-in in SYD they will help with the best option. I can always hope
