There is no cost difference between an RT (round trip) award ticket and two OW (one way) award tickets. You do lose the stopover option when doing two OW awards.

So book the outbound OW when it becomes available and wait a year or what ever delay you want to book the return OW.

With awards it is easy to get around the ticket life issue.
