My only exception would be if the 2.5 hour delay pushed arrival beyond the hours of operation of ground transportation at the destination (car rental office closed, no more trains/bus from airport).

In that case, I would consider mentioning this - but not demanding anything since airlines are never liable for consequential damages. Just let UA know that with the extra your fiance (might have) spent on local transportation there could be less left to spend on a future flight.
