I had this happen recently on an IRROPs. Someone (or something) was working on rebooking me and hadn't made it through when I called in to change something else. They had to give the system half an hour to clear out the random flight before they could book the flight I wanted.
+1, I had two random flights on my reservation for Friday, July 4th due to IRROPs. They didn't clear out till the next day. They included ATL - EWR and PDX - ORD. From looking at the details, they were all flights sharing the same plane associated with the route that was going to be the new route I was protected on. My guess, it's a glitch in the computer system where it's pulling either the tail number or the flight number and associated it with a future or past flight.
