If there are never award seats on the DL flights then perhaps there are on partners.
Best bet flying out of MCI would be a one stop in ATL and then to JNB....we flew to JNB via ATL in Feb. I booked in Business using at that time 150K....they intially had me on AF via CDG and return direct to ATL....because of a travel advisory back in Feb we got rebooked on the outbound direct to JNB from ATL.

I recall there were a lot more availiabilty on AF and KLM for the lower mileage amount. I would do everything possible to get on the direct from ATL.
