Bags must be collected at Customs and then rechecked at special area after clearing Immigration/Customs, then there's a security check to get back airside for the domestic flight. It is a tight connection, but AC is geared to handle this and as noted, will protect you on another flight is you're held up and the onward flight's departure is not delayed.
