One thing I didn't see, perhaps I overlooked it somewhere, is the upfront cost to do the Gold Challenge? I see where the example e-mail mentions $240 for the Platinum...is the fee the same for the Gold?

How many points needed for Gold?

I just pulled up my flights for August, September and November. I don't see where points are listed on the AA bookings? I see the miles though. You mentioned points not miles so I am trying to find where the points are listed?

I'd be flying First/Biz on all routes

August 14th = IAH to DFW & DFW to PHL
August 23rd = PHL to RDU & RDU to IAH

Sept 18th = IAH to DFW & DFW to LAS
Sept 23rd = LAS to DFW & DFW to IAH

Nov 13th = IAH to DFW & DFW to LIM
Nov 19th = LIM to DFW & DFW to IAH

Based on my reading in the Challenge thread and the wiki I'd get 1.5 points for flying First/Biz...so I should achieve the necessary criteria for Platinum?
Yes, flying Business or First (or B or Y fares in Economy) you earn 1.5 points per mile flown. Fare classes and points earnings are shown here on aa.com.

A lot more information on the Challenge can be found in Help Desk: AAdvantage Elite Status Challenge (Gold and Platinum) .

Gold Challenge requires 5,000 points, Platinum requires 10,000 points, in three months' time. Platinum is $240, fold iirc $120? But the benefits for Platinum are so much better, it's hard to imagine anyone challenging for Gold if they can easily acquire the points for Platinum. (From this page on aa.com, you can compare elite status levels and even download the members' guide for each level.)
