If the Ritz initiated contact, it was being proactive in advising you about the change, and I doubt that you would be entitled to any compensation, other than perhaps an adjustment in the rate. In any event, I recommend calling the Ritz and asking.
Please keep in mind that this is not equivalent to being "walked" upon arrival, and accordingly I am not certain that any compensation is called for.
Also, did you book the reservation yourself, or is the hotel stay part of an inclusive package? If this is the case, contact the tour operator.
The Ritz called me directly to inform me and upon further investigation, renovations are due to start on August 4th. I'm frustrated with the property because I find it hard to believe that they only received a month's notice that they would be undergoing renovations. I would have appreciated a call much sooner. The stay at the Ritz is for my honeymoon so it's extremely disappointing for me. Had I known that a suite wasn't available during my stay, I might have easily decided to stay on another island. With all of our travel arrangements booked, it's throwing a huge wrench in our plans.
