Subway routes have a single letter or a single number. Local bus routes have an identifying letter or letters to identify the principal borough of operation (M, Q, Bx, etc.) followed by a one-, two-, or three-digit number (e.g., M1, M104, Q70, Bx1, etc.).

Express buses use a different identifying system.

If you use the trip planner at www.mta.info, you can specify the modes of travel you do or do not want to be used.
