Ubud in early January with two year-old
Posting here instead of the Asia forum because I'm looking primarily at luxury resorts.
My wife and I are headed to Indonesia/Bali for the first time in early January with our soon to be two year-old son and 99% sure about staying in Ubud. No real interest in Seminyak, Jimbaran, or Nusa Dua. I'm mostly looking for relaxation and great local food with opportunities for short, off-resort excursions, same for my wife plus yoga. While I don't really have a budget (always willing to pay more for quality if the value proposition is there, for example we stayed at the St. Regis Bora Bora when 50% off rack rates were available), $300-$400 seemed like a reasonable amount to spend for a pool villa in Ubud with great views. Problem is that we're going during very high season so many places that are often available for under $400 at other times of the year like FS Sayan or Chedi at Tanah Gajah are much more expensive during our travel dates. Also, many of the other high-end places aren't geared towards families with kids or specifically recommend against bringing young children, if not prohibit them outright.
After reading through this forum and the Asia threads on FT and other travel sites for days, and doing some price shopping, I narrowed it down to the Komaneka Tanggayuda and Royal Pita Maha. Both have pretty close to unanimously positive reviews. What's kept me from pulling the trigger is that, while the website photos are certainly impressive, I started looking at some YouTube videos to get a more "accurate" or complete portrayal of the villas. And, unfortunately, the hard product at both places seemed fairly dated and/or worn for ostensibly five-star resorts charging commensurate prices. Then I looked at the Viceroy, where the hard product seemed much better, but their cheapest villas are over $500 and the reviews here are much more mixed though still positive on the whole.
One other factor is my SPG Platinum status. The Westin Ubud has been scheduled to open in late 2014, and the date keeps getting pushed back to the point where I have doubts about whether it will be open by early January. The prospect of paying points or something in the low $100s for a basic room, then upgrading to a villa through SNAs or cash (and getting qualification credit) is appealing too, but I just can't count this as a reliable option.
So I'm not sure what to do and would appreciate insights from others if there are options or ideas that I've missed. We looked briefly into private villas via VRBO and HomeAway but I'm worried about service recovery and quality of hard product, plus this may be a better option for future visits when we're more familiar with Bali and our preferences.
