The answer to your question lies with Delta.dumb.
Assume you have 200k SkyMiles, and then go to Delta's risible website and try to book an award flight to somewhere other than Augusta.
Compare this experience, and your options on alliance partners, to AA or UA.
There is a reason why Delta comes in at the bottom of frequent flyer surverys - an inflated currency coupled with the best IT that the 1990s had to offer is a heady brew.
