"Only with the new program" - in theory on 1/1/15 can a OW be (re)booked for half of one's miles.

Perhaps I should take my chances and book the return, in the hope that my seats are still available for re-issue on a OW 3 weeks out ?
(It's tricky and for my inbound on VA from AKL-SYD-PDX in January for 2)

Anyone else have any thoughts/experience with this issue ?
