That's an excellent question. When you reticket one leg on an award reservation you don't need availability on the other (i.e. if you have a LOW outbound and reisuse the return, you get to keep your LOW outbound even if it isn't available -- unlike a paid ticket).

That logic would imply your scenario should work, but I have no clue
