I am the poster that failed with Jet Blue. I decided to try AA and it worked as of today 6/30/2014. AA purchase was described as reported by poster "dw" as follows:

AA MISC SALE/ TAX/ FEE/EXDALLAS TX

It appears WF is able to differentiate based on the description containing the text "GIFT CARD".
