Aye, I'd have to agree. Engines are different, airframe is different, interior is different, wings are different, even materials are different. They even have vastly different shapes (ever look at how short the nose is on the 787?) I'm no engineer, but other than "fly by wire" and the fact that they both have (2) engines, I'd say they aren't that similar from a technical perspective.
Clearly, based on SBM's post, I'm wrong (at least from Boeing's marketing folk, who, of course would have most likely pushed for this.)
