I had 2 different recent experiences for I to I transfer (different airlines for arrival & departure). One time I already had BP for the connecting flight. I pre-requested an agent to meet me at arrival gate. Everything went well, through the "transfer desk" (an area), then passport/security control. Then upstairs to a lounge.
Next time, I did not have BP, and my connect time was more than 4 hours. I had to wait at the transfer desk area until my BP arrives.

So, be sure to have BP for your flight(s) and request an agent to meet at arrival gate, if necessary.
