I did this once, but it was years ago, so my experience is probably not relevant. I actually checked with the hotel, and they said they didn't care if I checked in or not. In fact they said they'd appreciate if I'd let them know I wasn't planning to, so they could sell the room to someone else. Your case may be entirely different.
