I go boutique whenever possible to achieve the same or comparable sense of luxury and service. For me, the UH was among the best in that regard. If you require spa or prefer a pool, obviously the UH will rank lower.
This is the same reason I prefer the Dock House in Cape Town over the Cape Grace--boutique and comparable levels of luxury and service, and of course a better price!
Landmark Mandarin Oriental definitely, even if it DOES have a Spa and a Pool. It is a delightful boutique-sized hotel with great service and food and really comfortable rooms and suites. Soooooooo much nicer than the Upper House IMHO.
