Edit: Looks like wheresmybagba was successful in getting TG to rebook him on his award reservation, so hopefully they can help me too.
The TG475 flight is showing F9 right now, so plenty of revenue seats available.
They most definitely can and will. Contact your local Thai office, let them know you are not happy with the rebooking and downgrade and let them know the specific flights you would like. They will then put the request in to Bangkok. Once the segments are in your booking you will just have to call UA and get them to reissue the ticket.
