If you do decide to check a bag, I would ALWAYS travel in casual pants, dress shirt, suit jacket, and dress shoes with your suit pants and tie in your carry-on. I always did this when I traveled internationally for business and it saved me a couple of times (mainly once in India where my bag didn't arrive for 5 days after I did, 1 day before I came home).
