I just went through 8 pages of posts and didn't see Asheville mentioned. Before I left East Tennessee, a 60 minute drive from AVL, it was fast becoming the microbrew capital of the East.

As a youngster in my 20's, I toured Coors (1976) in Golden and Schlitz in Winston-Salem (1979). I probably had other opportunities but spent 1982-1999 sober.

The best way to get into the AVL microbrew scene is via the Brews Cruise. We hit 3 breweries and consumed 15-20 samples. I have also visited several others independently of the cruise. It was a favorite thing to do with guests, especially since AVL is such a foodie destination and we could eat at a great restaurant before and after all the beer. ***Caution*** do not hit a bar before and after the brews cruise. Worst morning head of my life!

Anyway, here's what I have done in AVL

Pisgah Brewing Co
Asheville Brewing Co
Highland Brewing Co
French Broad Brewing Co
Lexington Avenue Brwewery
Green Man Brewery
Catawba Brewing Co

Most have tours, tastings, food, music, games, atmosphere out the wazoo. I can also recommend the following bar, which has 2 levels, including a lower level where only Belgian brew is served - do not go there after tours of 3 or more breweries. You end up doing stupid things and waking up in pain.
