There's usually at least 1 often 2 carriages that are unreserved on Virgin trains. Quite often the seat reservations fail to download.

If you get to the train early, especially off-peak, I'd be surprised if you couldn't get the seat you want - especially as Liverpool is a terminus and will be starting empty.
