Flight cancelled, missing connecting flights on different itienary (due to strike...)

Sitting now at TFS, based on FR24 our flight will be delayed quite a bit as the plane is still at LGW and scheduled departure is 20.35 meaning that at earliest I guess our departure could be around 01ish, more than 5 hours after scheduled.

Secondly, we have a prepaid hotel booking at LGW that we are most likely not able to use to reasonable state.

Luckily our connecting flight from LHR leaves at 8.40 tomorrow so we are not really in a rush but I guess EU261 is already breached and it remains to see whether the plane can actually fly back today.

Does the EU-compensation cover the hotel costs or should I reimburse it as well.

Edit: changed the topic to more relevant as right now it is not about compensation but survival.
