That would probably increase the chance of misconnects. At an outstation, they'd probably dump all the bags onto bag claim and realize the issue once it wasn't picked up.

That said, I think they went with UA's methodology of scanning everything, so I wonder if the machine alerts them to the connection, even at an outstation.

I've done some bizarre connections with bags at outstations (e.g., UA to US at SAN) with old UA and never had a problem.

But my buddy was flying with CO once CLE-BWI-EWR with a long connection and asked me what would happen. I said that CO had little in terms of automation and would dump the bag on the carousel. He had extra time and just for laughs went to the carousel and sure enough it came out.
