There was, I think, a generation of airports that experimented with moving away from the railway station design mentality to try to improve the passenger experience. CDG1 and the earlier bits of CDG2 were rather in this mould, too (with CDG1 also allowing aircraft to taxi away from the gate without having either to power back or be pushed back). Ditto the general layout of DFW and MCI (as already mentioned).
