Building a dedicated infrastructure for domestics has its own cost, and the biometric identification is a neat solution that lets us enjoy the full airport facilities.
Indeed - we used to have a segregated domestic / Ireland section with no biometrics needed. The consequence was a severely restricted range of facilities.
If we returned to a segregated system, there would very probably be no viable case for installing a sophisticated and expensive biometric system to cater for the relatively few people who felt like wandering from the domestic side to the international side and back again.
