Thanks for sharing your experience. I think I'd re-plan my visit in early Sept then. The main reason of my visit is to experience their culture. If knowing most Parisans will have their holidays then the cheaper hotel rates just doesn't cut it.
To visit in August would certailnly be to experience their culture, but not in a good way!
To visit early in September after the rentree would be to see Paris and meet Parisians at their best - the people are refreshed after their month-long break, the weather is still good, everything is open.
