On some routes it can be much less than a month. I've been watching LHR-STR fares for a couple of weeks, there was a zeroing-out of fare buckets about 8 days before departure. BA.com offering £274 for a one-way flight ("only 2 seats left at this price").
Happily, G is still wide open, so I've just booked for 2500 Avios + £42.50 at Avios.com ^
