I feel you. This year I took students on 17 debate trips to destinations including LAS, MSP, ORD, LEX, ATL, and MCI. I also spent over 50 nights in hotels with the kids. I led another group of kids on a Civil Rights trip from Little Rock to Selma. Even on my chaperoned trips I have had kids fly solo at times (because they had to return early for a test or interview, or head straight from a national championship to a summer camp). Heck, earlier this year during irrops American gave us the option of splitting our group up or getting home two days late because they could not accommodate all of us on the same flight until then. Needless to say, I took the risk of sending the kids solo (but I made the airline put all the minors on non-stop flights, and insisted on putting the adult chaperones on the last flights to leave, which was not how the airline originally set things up, despite our explanation and request).

So I think about liability a lot. But I also loved debate when I was a student, and I love my job as a debate coach, so I choose not to let those fears keep me from doing my job. Besides, as a teacher I don't really have any assets for anyone to take.
