It is a small part of the
operation of the program, but one with great impact. Spending time living on a college campus is an inspirational experience for these kids, some of whom have never been out of their home town. It gives them a sense of possibility and makes the idea of attending college real for kids who will be the first in their families to go to college. It also provides an opportunity for the kids to have the broader and deeper instruction that more privileged debaters receive. When they return to school in the fall they share what they learned with the rest of their team, improving the knowledge and skills of scores of debaters who did not get the opportunity to travel to camp. Additionally, knowing that they might be chosen for a scholarship to attend a debate camp is a terrific motivator, encouraging our debaters to work hard in order to be selected.
