And yea, regardless of your flights, you shouldn't have to pay for up to 3 pieces of check-in luggage. I would've flashed my CP card and cited the baggage allowance of a CP
The OP implied however, that he had Platinum status in his post with reference to 3 bag allowance being for 1st class however "no longer for Plats and below since the merger"
If no longer in 1st and not holding a status that allowed for the 3 bags, it seems quite correct that he was being charged for the extra bag
If holding status that allows for 3 bags, then indeed shouldn't be charged
