First, many thanks for the explanations re ssid and mac filter. I now understand the security lies with wpa2 n aes.

However, the former still prevents us normal laymen from free loading off of someone's wifi network. And yes, realize it's inconvenient for house guests and newly bought devices. Our workaround is for them to temporarily tether off of one of our smartphones.
