I notice OP's profile say Los Angeles, and I'm LA based also. Over the past 3-4 years, I'm generally happy with UA, and have no plans to change at this time. Most of my travel is LAX-JFK-LAX, so the PS service suits me well. I also go LAX-SFO-LAX and setting aside weather it's usually good.
Other than weather related issues, I've had 2 terrible experiences where it was UA's problem, and could have been prevented. I'll skip the details..
Food? Here's the way I see it. If I spend $250 for a one way from LAX-JFK (about the norm for me booking 3-6 weeks in advance) I do not expect a meal on caliber with what I would get for $100+ at a restaurant. I get what might be a $25-50 meal on the ground. Would I prefer a $200 sushi meal with fine sake? Damn yes, but I'm realistic (or so I think I am).
I have noticed a loose trend, in that people based on the busier hubs, SFO, EWR, ORD, seem to have more complaints, and rightly so. I've had some bizarre experiences at SFO, and based on feedback here on FT, I have avoided EWR and ORD. Only one connection at IAH in January, and that was OK for me.
