On the food topic - Is this really a driver for people to chose an airline? Does AA offer any food that would make you not want to buy something at the airport instead? I dunno I just don't get it. I find few of my flights at meal times where I am actually forced to eat on a plane and if and when I have a choice I would still rather buy and bring on board. I just really don't get the big deal - perhaps I am missing something but even international F meals haven't been impressive to me on any airline.
It doesn't have to be a "driver" - it's simply another negative aspect of UA among so many other service lowlights that make my business feel unappreciated. Like many in this thread, I also made the (incorrect) assumption that all US-based domestic service was equally bad and AA's food proved me quite wrong on that point.
Obviously food on the ground is preferable at most airports, but busy schedules, irrops, or just short connections make it difficult to grab food on the ground. Now that I'm flying AA for most of my domestics, it is so nice to be able to rely on having edible (and often times pretty decent!) food waiting for me on the plane. I just couldn't eat the UA food anymore - it made me feel sick more often than not.
