I'm considering moving my business from United to American.

I normally fly Y, and I'm trying to book SMF/SFO/SJC -> BRU in last week Aug
also trying to book SMF/SFO/SJC -> FRA first week of October.

I'm finding really expensive flights. 20%-30% more expensive than United.

Am I missing something here? Some clever way to book flights? AA and United have similar products so they can't be that different in prices.
